Murmur · Apple Dictation

Built in, or built around your workflow?

Apple Dictation is the sensible baseline. Murmur is a focused paid beta for people who want a small Mac tool with local clean-up and explicit list commands.

This comparison is written by Vanguard Forge, the maker of Murmur. It is a product guide, not an independent review or an accuracy test.

Choose Apple Dictation when…

  • You want a feature already included with macOS.
  • You need broad built-in language and region support, subject to Apple’s availability notes.
  • You are happy with punctuation and commands such as “new line” and “new paragraph”.

Consider Murmur when…

  • You want a dedicated menu-bar workflow on an Apple silicon Mac.
  • You want local Apple speech and clean-up in one focused tool.
  • You regularly dictate structured notes and want Murmur’s structured-list commands; those command paths are tested in Murmur.

Known limit: Murmur is a US$5 one-time paid beta listed on Payhip. Its tested target is English on Apple silicon running macOS 27.2. The beta2 package is available from the listing, and Murmur is not presented here as a replacement for Apple Dictation on every Mac.

Where the paths differ

Setup and reach

Apple Dictation is enabled in Keyboard settings and can enter text anywhere you can type. Murmur has its own microphone permission and setup flow and is being developed for a narrower Mac target.

Processing and privacy

Apple says Keyboard settings show whether general text Dictation is processed on the device or sent to Siri servers. Murmur’s product plan is local Apple speech and clean-up. Neither statement removes the need to check the actual setting, model path or release status on the machine you use.

Formatting

Apple documents punctuation, emoji, new line and new paragraph commands. Murmur adds tested structured-list command handling. The two command vocabularies are not identical.
