Murmur · comparison guide

Compare Mac dictation apps.

This is a practical comparison of Murmur, Apple Dictation and a few established Mac dictation apps. It covers where each tool fits, what it sends away, and what it does not try to be.

Three sensible starting points.

Your choice mostly depends on whether you want built-in convenience, a local-first tool, or broader platform coverage.

Apple Dictation

The built-in choice

Included with macOS and available wherever you can type. Apple documents device processing for general text Dictation in supported setups, with language and feature availability varying by region.

The useful differences.

“Local” describes the product path documented by the maker. It does not mean every optional feature uses the same path.

A fair comparison has edges.

Murmur is an early paid beta listing at US$5 once through Payhip. The tested target is English on an Apple silicon Mac running macOS 27.2. Other macOS versions are not confirmed here. The beta2 package is available from the listing.

There is no independent accuracy, speed or privacy ranking on this page. A local path can still have setup and model limits. A cloud path can still be the better fit when you need more platforms or a service that is already mature.
